Improving your drawing skills

13 April 2012

If you’re drawing indoors, make sure you have good lighting. If you not able to get that strong directional light, you won’t see the highlights and shadows.

If you don’t know how to set up your composition, use a viewfinder. This is the best way to start a drawing. You can buy viewfinder in a shop or make it yourself. Simply cut a rectangle out of a piece of cardboard and use it to visually crop your subject. Look through your viewfinder, draw everything that is within the frame. This will definitely improve your composition.

It’s recommended to always begin drawing along the edges first. This will keep you from running out of space later. When you take your blank paper, try to figure out where along the edges you should begin. Making little marks halfway along each edge of your drawing should help you.

When you only start drawing, do it lightly. At the end you will see why it’s better to do so. Draw the negative shapes between objects instead of trying to draw some object. This will help you focus on the specific shapes in front of you.

Next step you can take is to close one eye to flatten out the image. This will help you eliminate depth perception and make the subject you’re drawing appear flat.

When you’re drawing or painting, don’t forget to look back and forth as often as possible. Try to make it a habit. Never let your eyes rest for too long in one place. If during the drawing process you notice your mistakes – fix them immediately. This will save you time later.

When the drawing is almost finished, it’s better to take a break. Take a breather and then come back to finish the work. No matter what you’re drawing, we hope these hints will often come in handy.

Never give up – become who you want to be

There are not so many restrictions in the world of art. On the contrary, sometimes there is too much freedom. Artist can produce everything they perceive as an art. But still, even when the artists claim they are making an art, it does not mean they are making a good art. Sometimes people can make something that is obviously not art, but refer to it as art. Some people disagree with the statement that anyone can be an artist, because it takes away the value of art. They (in most cases these people are artists) refer to the fact that even non-art people like the professional art than the amateur one. Maybe it’s true, but still like with the music, we all have different interests. Not everyone likes the same songs or singers. The same goes to the painting. Some people enjoy classic art while others prefer abstract or modern art. It’s all a question of taste.

So, if you want to become an artist and create beauty, do it. Painting can be an exciting and rewarding hobby. It can be the way you live and perceive the world around you. Creating things of beauty with your own hands is more than exiting. You won’t believe your own eyes at what you can create using the simplest materials, tools and your imagination.

If you don’t know where to take the first step, start by exploring your imagination. Let your imagination take you on a journey. You will be amazed at what you can admire within yourself. You can share your insights and ideas with someone you love and trust. It really helps to move forward if someone encourages and supports you. Be sure your part time hobby could turn into something more. Believe in yourself and work hard to achieve the wanted results. Make a positive impact in your life by inviting the things that make you happy. If you like painting, don’t give up if something goes wrong. Try your best to become skillful, then move forward by improving yours skills. With time you will definitely find yourself skillful enough to bring beauty to this world. Every painting has its goal. Decide what you are aiming for and just follow you objective. Be yourself and be proud of who you are and what you make with your own hands. It’s the most important in our life.

Along the way, you will learn many useful things (interesting facts, different techniques, etc.). Find things that inspire you to create. Wait a little and in some couple of years you may have an exhibition in your favorite art gallery. Art galleries are inviting young, talented good artists. Those that make pleasing art, no matter are they amateurs or professionals, will end up in a gallery. The art that gets selected for galleries, etc. has qualities that lots of people like. Who knows maybe exactly your artworks will be an object of enjoyment. Everything is possible, all you need is confidence in yourself, desire and will power to work in spite of everything.

Is it possible to paint with a palette knife?

16 February 2011

Many artists create all of their works with a palette knife due to the texture and palette knifemovement it gives to the painting. And for many artists palette knife became one of the most important tools. Originally they used palette knives to mix and move paint around pallets, then artists started to use them to apply the paint to the canvas so it could be spread smoothly. Palette knives come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. And today you are able to buy several different types of palette knives, with different steel quality. The blades on the palette knife used for painting are usually made from forged steel and are very flexible. The handles are made from hardwood and the blade should extend completely through it. There are three main types of knives: a symmetrical knife that has a rounded tip, which is good for mixing paints, a knife that is symmetrical with a pointed tip, which can be used for details and sharp edges, and an asymmetrical knife that has a pointed tip and is diagonal on the end. The asymmetrical knife can be used to apply paint, scrape paint off (which is called “sgraffito”) and even clean excess paint off of a palette.

There are several methods to apply paint to a canvas or board using a palette knife. Dipping the edge of a palette knife into paint and then dragging the point across the canvas will create very fine lines for edging or detailing. Starting with a thick line and altering the pressure from heavy to light, will create motion and interest in your painting. Sgraffito, or scratching into the paint, can be created by spreading paint onto the canvas and using a sharp tip of a knife and scratching into the paint, removing it to reveal the under color. To create large sections of thick texture, load up a large blob of paint on your knife and press it down onto the canvas. It can be smoothed out as if icing a cake to cover large areas. Impressionistic effects can be created with small dabs of paint applied quickly with the end of a knife. Effects can easily be altered depending on how much paint is used on the palette knife and how much pressure is being applied while moving the knife over the canvas.

Both acrylic and oil paint are appropriate for use with palette knife painting. Oil and acrylic paints can continue to be built up with several layers, allowing each layer to dry prior to adding more paint. The thicker the paint, the longer the drying time will be. This means that by using a knife it is possible to layer wet paint on top of wet paint without disturbing the layer underneath, thus maintaining a freshness in the painting. Also, it’s important to keep the knife clean, because it will automatically keep your colors pure. No solvents required. All you need is a quick wipe of the cloth. So, don’t forget to wipe paint off of a palette knife in between each application so that it is clean and colors do not blend unintentionally. You can manipulate paint in a variety of different ways with a knife just by changing your hand position on the handle. The most common use of a palette knife is to add texture to a painting. This is usually done with a larger, wider palette knife heaped high with paint. The more flexible the knife, the more control you have of the paint. Palette
knives are ideal for laying down large swaths of color for layering. Today, the palette knife is used by artists everywhere, for many different reasons. With the help of palette knife you even can remove paint from your canvas. This is handy for making designs, as well as for cleaning up mistakes. Knives are ideally suited for use in oil paintings of architectural subjects or for anything which is man made.

Become who you want to be

10 December 2010

Whether you are looking to develop an interesting new hobby, to express yourself, or to begin a new career, you can learn how to paint or maybe even how to create real art. Anyone can be an artist if he or she has desire, excitement and determination. You can become an artist or improve your art. Just start to study art. You’ll be amazed at the level of creativity you possess that is just waiting to be released. Just try, because sometimes there are things you don’t think you’ll enjoy, but you end up loving them.

Painting can be a challenge, and those who are better at it can make a living from this form of art. Some people think that artists love to paint, but usually for the money unless just for fun. I disagree. Dedicated artist still paint even after people rejected their works, like it was with van Gogh, for example. If people love to paint and are dedicated to art, money is not among the most important things. Nothing will stop artists to do what they like – to create art. If you’re an artist, you can actually make money from your art, feel good about it, and build up a following to support your independent career. The bad news is that every year more than 30,000 artists graduate from art school in the United States alone, but most of them fail to make a living with their art. Only few artists manage to support themselves in the career they are passionate about. The good news is that most artists fail because have not been properly trained in how to represent themselves, build a customer base, and actually sell their great artwork. But not every artist wants to make money. Some are interested in art as an introduction to another career, and others pursue art as a passion or hobby.

Someone may ask why people do study art if they are aware of the heavy competition, and artists have small chance to be recognized, and only a few of them will become famous and will earn a lot of money. But don’t fall for the idea that only a few artists are successful people. Competition exists in every field and those who study art are doing the right thing by becoming knowledgeable about their interests. And if they have confidence in themselves, if they have an enthusiasm for art, they will definitely get a well-paid job. If art is your passion, never despair! Never give up!

Artists look inside themselves, the work hard, only after that they can paint something really valuable, they can reach the top. You also should practice, paint every free minute you have and believe in yourself. Art requires practice and patience. Anything is possible and you can become an artist! Good luck
